Why you shouldn buy bread at the grocery store

Bread is a fixture on most grocery lists, and certainly a staple of a thrifty budget. After all, the food pyramid recommends Americans consume six ounces of grains each day, which includes pasta, rice, and yes, bread.

Assuming each person in a family of four eats two pieces of bread a day, the average American family can buy up to 133 loaves of bread a year. And the average cost of bread is $2 a loaf -- which means families could be spending as much as $250 or more on bread each year.

Luckily, San Antonio shoppers have an easy, thrifty way to eliminate shopping for bread at the grocery store, slashing their costs considerably in the process.

Where to save dough on bread buys

FlowerFoods, the parent company to such bread brands as Nature's Own and Butterkrust, runs a series of bakery outlets wow items sprinkled throughout San Antonio. These bakery outlets, called Butterkrust Bakeries, offer bread at 50% off or more on grocery store pricing. And it's not just bread on their shelves -- tortillas, English muffins, sandwich rounds, cookies, muffin mixes, and more are all up for grabs, at far better prices that you can typically find at your neighborhood HEB.

Bakery outlets have an undeserved rep as being just a depository for day-old, nearly moldy bread. But more often, bread for sale in these outlets are anywhere from five to six days away from their sell-by date.

When bakery outlets do sell day-old bread, they sell it at deeply discounted prices, sometimes as low at 75 cents for two loaves. Considering day-old bread makes great croutons, breadcrumbs, and French toast, this may be a deal too good to resist. Or use this neat old trick on reviving stale bread, and happily make up a sandwich with that day-old loaf.

In one recent visit to a Butterkrust bakery outlet, the bread for sale was the same brand, with the same sellby date, as the bread I'd just bought two days before at my local Target. The only difference? Target was selling the loaf for $2.49, and Butterkrust offered two loaves to me for the same price. Voila -- a 50% savings, just for visiting!

Other deals we located included a free loaf of bread when you purchased a bottle of ketchup (a $4.79 value, priced at just $1.89), 2 boxes of whole wheat English muffins for a combined total of $2.29, and 99 cents for a bag of whole wheat sandwich rounds.

Plus, the store I visited was offering a free loaf of bread when your purchase was $5 or more. In short, I paid $6.86 for 7 items, all name-brand, that would have cost me at least $15 to buy at a typical budget grocery store.

That's a 55% savings -- and nothing I bought was past its sell-by date. Across the course of a year, I could thereby save as much as $138 off my grocery bills, simply by buying my bread at a different location.
