This is Sydney's third grand final in eight years. It's an incredible achievement. No one should forget the fight shown by men like Basil Sellers, Richard Colless, Mike Willesee and Peter Weinert to steer the club through the dark days. The advantage

The weakness

Sydney must stop the ball getting out into the open spaces. When Hawthorn run and spread out of buy wow weapons the stoppages, that's danger time. Sydney have to shut down the spaces off half-back and make this game as attritional as possible. They're not going to out-flair Hawthorn. The Hawks also have the most left-footers in the competition. Sydney have to play Teddy Richards on Franklin. Franklin is the better player but Richards reads the game beautifully and knows when to stick or drop off his man. If he can push Franklin out of goal-kicking range, Richards can drop off. Personally, I'd never have Franklin out of the forward line.

Hawthorn - Big MCG is your friend

The weakness

I worry about Hawthorn's physicality in certain areas. The Swans will use their bodies to close down their space and running game. The Hawks will need to demonstrate real toughness to stand their ground. There's also concern about Luke Hodge. He has been ill and that has to have an impact. Hawthorn will need their captain at his best in an arm-wrestle like this.

The match-up

Hawthorn need to limit Kieren Jack's effectiveness. The son of Garry has been brilliant for Sydney all season. The question is whether the Hawks will put a hard or a soft tag on him. That will determine whether they put a Sam Mitchell or a Brad Sewell or a Shaun Burgoyne on him. I think a coach has to gamble to win a grand final. In the 1983 grand final, the Bombers were walloped by the Hawks to the tune of 83 points. The next year we pretty much put the backline in the forward line and turned the tables on Hawthorn to win by 24 points. The MCG is a big casino. Today we find out who hides in their cave and who rolls the dice.
